Trip to the Mt Rothwell Conservation and Research Centre and the Cranbourne section of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens

The Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups, supported by the North East Catchment Management Authority, are organising a bus trip to Melbourne to visit other Landcare Groups within the Melton area and visit the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne.

Melton Landcare Area
Visit Melton and Werribee Gorge, to view projects underway that may be of interest in our catchment.

Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group
Grassland Restoration Project on Public Land to re-establish indigenous vegetation.

Grow West Revegetation Program
Native Revegetation & Management Program encompassing various management techniques to restore native vegetation. This program is run by the Port Phillip and Western Port Catchment Management Authority and is partially funded by corporate sponsors.

Mt Rothwell Conservation & Research Centre
An evening guided walk of the conservation and see native wildlife, including:

  •  Eastern Quoll (Extinct in Mainland Australia),
  • Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Critically Endangered),
  • Red – bellied Pademelon (Extinct in Mainland Australia),
  • Brush – tailed Rock Wallaby (Critically Endangered),
  • Long – nosed Potoroo (Vulnerable),
  • Spot – tailed (or Tiger) Quoll (Endangered)
  • Rufous Bettong (Extinct in Victoria).

 

This is an opportunity to see species that you are unlikely to see in mainland Australia. These species are living freely in a protected habitat. The aim of the Centre is to “Restore a safe habitat for Australia’s threatened wildlife in Victoria and provide an educational experience for all”.

Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne
Take a walk through the Australian Garden and explore our remarkable natural world and discover ore about our amazing native plants. This is a unique experience and is aimed at sharing the beauty  and diversity of Australian plants.

This is one of Victoria’s most precious areas of native bushland and offers nature – lovers the  chance to explore 363 hectares of untouched heathlands, wetlands and woodlands. These  expansive natural gardens are also home to thriving bird and animal life, including several rare and endangered species.

Saturday 30th May
7.00am Meet at Yackandandah Foodworks Carpark
7.15am Bus Departs
~10.00am Quick Stop for Morning Tea
12.30pm Arrive at Werribee Gorge / Melton
Lunch provided
Dinner provided
5.00pm Mt Rothwell Conservation & Research Centre
7.00pm Travel to Hotel (details to be confirmed)

Sunday 31st May
From 7.00am Breakfast provided at Hotel
8.30am Bus departs
10.00am Arrive at Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne
11.00am Tour of Gardens
12.00noon Lunch
If time permits – visit a Native Nursery in the Area
1.30pm Bus Departs for Home
7.00pm Arrive a Yackandandah Foodworks Carpark
