Landholders from Tallangatta Valley and surrounding areas are invited to learn more about dung beetles and how they can be involved in the “Do it with Dung – from the Mountains to the Murray” project.

This project has been funded by the Federal government’s “Caring for our Country” initiative and aims to establish over 100 dung beetle monitoring sites across North East Victoria and Corowa shire. The sites would be maintained by volunteers and checked on a fortnightly basis over a 12 to 24 month period. Volunteers would need to have access to a steady supply of non-toxic dung, and be prepared to spend about one to two hours per fortnight setting traps, identifying captured beetle species and sending in the results.

The monitoring information will provide important data on what species are active in the region and their activity period. Different dung beetle species are active at different times of the year. In order to achieve maximum dung burial it is essential to have a range of dung beetle species. The monitoring results will be used to plan future dung beetle releases for the region.

The monitoring and identification workshop is open to anyone with an interest in dung beetles. It will provide information on how to monitor and identify dung beetle species, and the opportunity to register as a volunteer monitor.
