LANDCARE & PRIMARY PRODUCERS SURVEY

Landcare groups and primary producers across the country are being urged to participate in a survey about the health of Landcare to get a better understanding of their priorities and the situation that they face. There are no right or wrong answers, but your participation is essential to provide an accurate picture across the country. The resulting information is important if we are better able to inform debate about what is needed in the future.

CARBON FARMING INITIATIVE METHODOLOGIES  - OPEN FOR COMMENT

The following draft funding guidelines for the development of carbon farming methodologies are open for comment at http://www.climatechange.gov.au/cfi until COB Friday 4 May 2012

  • The Methodology Development Program
  • The Research and Development Stream of the Indigenous Carbon Farming Fund.

 

The final guidelines for these programs will be released in May 2012 and applications will be open for one month.

 

Public release of the following methodology proposals have also been released for comment at http://www.climatechange.gov.au/government/initiatives/carbon-farming-initiative/methodology-development/methodologies-under-consideration.aspx:

  • Native forest protection projects and
  • Reforestation and afforestation

The proposals are open for public comment until 13 May 2012.

 

To date methodologies for the Capture and combustion of landfill gas, Destruction of methane generated from manure in piggeries, Environmental plantings and Savanna Burning have been endorsed. The committee has requested further information in relation to the proposed methodologies for Management of large feral herbivores (camels) in the Australian rangelands and Avoided emissions from diverting waste from landfill.

 

 

NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION RESEARCH FACILITY SURVEY

The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility is conducting research amongst Network members and other stakeholders to help measure their performance.  The outcomes of this program will ensure your information needs are being met so you can feel knowledgeable and informed about climate change adaptation in Australia. While the survey is focused on NCCARF for the first half, the second half gives you an opportunity to state what sort of information you need.

This survey will take about 15 minutes to complete. There is also a prize draw to win a trip to attend the 2012 NCCARF and CSIRO Adaptation conference in Melbourne on 26th-28th June (including travel and accommodation expenses up to $2000).

THE CAPACITY BUILDING INITIATIVE

 

Applications are now open for a fundraising and resource development program designed to empower not-for-profit organisations to develop and implement revenue generating strategies. The Capacity Building Initiative is a free peer-mentorship program that provides continuing professional development, training and education for not-for-profits needing to build up and sustain strong fund raising practices. VOLUNTEERING VIDEO COMPETITION: FOR 15 to 25 year olds

 

The federal government has launched a competition for 15 to 25 year olds designed to inspire more young people to volunteer.

They’re looking for short video ads that capture all the great things about volunteering. Prizes include film-making kits complete with cameras and software.

The competition closes 5pm AEST Sunday 22 July 2012.

WOOLWORTHS AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

 

Woolworths is offering 30 young Australians the opportunity to attend the 2012 Woolworths Agricultural Business Scholarship program. MYER FOUNDATION

 

The Myer Foundation is currently accepting applications under its education theme on an ongoing basis, with no fixed closing date. These small grants (up to $10,000) will support projects that work with young people in rural and regional communities (and other young people, refer website). Dr Maarten Stapper, Farming Systems Agronomist, will be conducting free workshops in Corangamite on 9 May 2012.

VOLUNTEERFEST 2012: EVERY ONE COUNTS

Part of National Volunteer Week 2012, the day will feature a range of speakers, presentations and discussions relevant to all volunteering organisations and a chance to celebrate your work, learn about new ways of working and make valuable connections.

LANDCARE FACILITATOR INDUCTION WORKSHOP

 

The Victorian Landcare Council and DSE will be running an Induction Workshop 14th & 15th June 2012, for the new Victorian Government funded Local Landcare Facilitators, Regional Landcare Facilitators and any other Landcare employees.

INDIGENOUS LAND OWNER AND MANAGER TRAINING

 

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) would like to offer all Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rural and semi-rural land owners and managers the opportunity to attend a free one day course on land management on Tuesday 15 May at the Victorian State Government Offices in Bendigo.

 

The free one day course aims to provide practical information relevant to all participants who are involved in land management and will include interactive demonstrations and activities. The course has been designed to provide information on whole farm planning practices, high priority weed species, pest animals such as rabbits and foxes, vehicle hygiene and chemical use on properties. A practical weed identification activity for high risk species is planned as wells as a demonstration on

vehicle and machinery hygiene will take place on the day, informing land owners on how they can easily keep vehicles clean to prevent the spread of weeds and plant diseases.

1 JULY START DATE FOR ASSOCIATIONS INCORPORATION ACT CHANGES

The new Associations Incorporation Act, which regulates the governance of many Victorian not-for-profits, will come into effect on 1 July 2012 after significant delays.

 

Consumer Affairs Victoria is responsible for regulation of the Act and has informed Volunteering Victoria that they will contact all affected organisations directly with detail about the changes.  Workshops and online information are also planned. The FTLA will pass on relevant details to groups once they have been received.

CARING FOR OUR COUNTRY REVIEW FINAL REPORT

 

The final report on the review of Caring for our Country has been released. The review of Caring for our Country has now concluded and the government will announce details of the next phase of natural resource management delivery over coming months. MANY PUBLICS. PARTICIPATION, INVENTIVENESS AND CHANGE:  a report on public participation about the environment from around Victoria 2011-2012

 

Throughout 2011 in preparation for the State of the Environment Report the Commissioner undertook regional tours across Victoria to understand the needs of local communities as well as sustainability activities that are happening on the ground.
