FAREWELL JOANNE

CARBON COCKY AWARDS

The Carbon Cocky Awards are now open to all landholders in Australia who are achieving excellence in Carbon Farming techniques which deliver improved soil carbon sequestration, water management, solar harvesting, energy efficiency and renewable energy OR who have developed innovative techniques or inventions to improve farm based carbon storage or emissions reduction

Winners of each of these awards receive $1000 and a free ticket to the conference, and then there is the:   The National Carbon Cocky of the Year Award. Another $1000.

JUNIOR LANDCARE GARDEN GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE

Help your school or youth group win a $5000 Junior Landcare Garden Grant!  Plus there are an additional 5 x $1000 garden grants up for grabs. Entries close at 11.59 AEST 5 October 2011

Coles and Yates are working together with Junior Landcare to educate children about sustainability and the environment.  As part of this program there are $10 000 worth of garden grants available to schools and youth groups.  These grants will encourage children to get their hands dirty and learn more about nature.

BE NATURAL GRANTS

Landcare Australia and Be Natural are pleased to launch a $125,000 grants program that will provide funding to voluntary environmental community groups across Australia. FARMREADY GRANTS RE-OPEN

Changes will be introduced to extend the availability of funds and make the program accessible to more primary producers. The Minister also announced that the Farm Ready Reimbursement Grants will be expanded to include agritourism and food tourism training.

Primary producers and wild game harvesters will now be entitled to a reimbursement of 65% of the costs of approved courses. Each primary producer can still claim up to a maximum $1500 each financial year, with funding up to $500 also available to assist with travel, accommodation and child care expenses. The arrangements for indigenous land managers will not change and they will be eligible for a 100% reimbursement of the cost of approved training courses up to the maximum of $1500 annually. CARBON FARMING INITIATIVE: POSITIVE & NEGATIVE LIST SUBMISSIONS

The legislation to underpin the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) was passed by Parliament on 23 August 2011. The legislation aims to provide long-term certainty to participants of the CFI and underpin the environmental integrity and market value of carbon credits.

The Government has released exposure draft regulations for public consultation. dealing with activities that would be considered additional and eligible to participate in the CFI and activities that would be ineligible. The consultation runs until 16 September 2011 and would welcome your feedback.

CALL FOR BASIN COMMUNITY COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The Murray-Darling Basin Authority is calling for expressions of interest for the second term of the Basin Community Committee (BCC).

The BCC gives key advice to the Authority on community engagement for the Basin Plan and other community issues regarding water in the Basin.

Nominees must have expertise or interest in community, local government or Indigenous water resource matters, irrigated agriculture or environmental water management.

Since their appointment on 10 June 2009, the current BCC has played an important role in the MDBA’s consultation with communities during the development of the proposed Basin Plan. The BCC has met 23 times in Canberra and various regions across the Basin. During regional meetings, the BCC has met with community and industry groups to build on their basin-wide perspective.

Applications will open on 19 August 2011 for a period of six weeks, closing on 30 September 2011.  Members are appointed by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority for 3-year terms commencing mid 2012. The BCC is an advisory committee under the Water Act 2007.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Victorian farmers are invited to have their say on the effectiveness of agricultural education and training as part of a parliamentary inquiry.  The Victorian Parliament’s Education and Training Committee is examining the issue of agricultural education and training in Victoria and will consider what improvements can be made in this area.

A priority for the Inquiry will be to consider whether agricultural-based education and training is currently meeting the needs of farmers and the industry.

HANDLING CONFLICT AND MISCONDUCT IN THE NFP WORKPLACE - RISK MANAGEMENT AND DISCIPLINE.

THE HEART OF THE FARM - FREE WORKHEALTH CHECKS AVAILABLE FOR FARMERS

It is certainly true - Farmer health is directly linked to the health of the farm. Too often we focus on priorities in our workplace that we genuinely believe to be important, but without our health our priorities change. Each year in regional Australia approximately 9000 people die of coronary artery disease. If regional mortality rates were equal to that of metropolitan areas, then an incredible 900 or 10% of these lives would have been saved. Unfortunately farmers often ignore the warning signs of an imminent health event that if it occurs, is guaranteed to reprioritise your life. Some of the symptoms commonly ignored by farmers and farm workers are chest pain, shortness of breath and an unusual lack of energy. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms please contact your General Practitioner immediately.

It is often the independence of the farmer that is the root cause of ignoring such significant health warnings. A major worry for farmers is, who’s going to run the farm if I can’t? Prevention is obviously far better than the cure, so with this in mind, let us investigate one excellent option available to farmers and their workers to obtain a health check.

WorkSafe Victoria has developed a free, confidential, 15 minute WorkHealth check conducted in the convenience of your workplace. Each WorkHealth check includes a brief lifestyle survey, and you’ll also have your blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and waistline measured by a trained health professional. UPDATE ON REFORMS TO VICTORIAN INCORPORATED ASSOCIATIONS

The Victorian Parliament recently passed the Consumer Acts Amendment Act 2011 which included, amongst other things, a proposal to defer the default commencement date for the reforms to the Associations Incorporation Act 1981. Currently, the reforms (which are explained by PilchConnect http://www.pilch.org.au/Assets/Files/Summary%20of%20upcoming%20reforms.pdf  ) provide for a number of changes to the way Victorian incorporated associations must operate, with these changes originally intended to be brought into effect by 1 December 2011.

PilchConnect can now confirm that the implementation for the proposed reforms has been deferred to 1 July 2012, in order to allow enough time for new Model Rules to be developed, as well as providing an opportunity for consideration to be given to improve the regulatory approach to associations.

The Victorian Government intends to consult further with the not-for-profit sector throughout this extended reform process, and we urge you to keep track of these reforms via the PilchConnect e-bulletin to ensure you can have your voice heard during this period of exciting reforms for Victorian incorporated associations.

 

TAX BASICS FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has recently released a new version of its guide Tax basics for non-profit organisations. The guide provides an overview of tax obligations for not-for-profit organisations, and is a valuable resource for treasurers, officer bearers and employees involved in the administration of a not-for-profit organisation.

The guide will help you determine whether your organisation is 'not-for-profit' and explains a range of taxes and concessions that affect not for profit organisations, including:

•           Income tax;

•           Goods and services tax;

•           Employees and other workers;

•           Fundraising;

•           Record keeping, administration, and payment; and

•           State/territory government taxes and duties.

PRACTICE CHANGE IN LAND MANAGEMENT

On the 16th of August the Australian Bureau of Agricultural & Resource Economics & Sciences (ABARES) released the preliminary national survey results of “Drivers of Practice Change in Land Management in Australian Agriculture”. This survey was conducted for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries to help inform the review of the Caring for Our Country Program (CFOC).

While these are preliminary results, they did highlight a number of important factors such as;

1) Financial and environmental factors rated highly in influencing land management practice decisions.

2) Improving soil quality was the major environmental motivation.

3) Landcare along with farm productivity groups was the most valued source of support.

4) The National Landcare Program had the highest level of recognition by farmers of current and previous Australian Government NRM programs.

5) Farmers indicated that financial limitations were the most limiting factor in the uptake of NRM practices.
