By now most of you will have heard on the grapevine that the war against ragwort is over! Not only has the Department of Agriculture declared ragwort as the victor, but it is prepared to accept our members’ blood, sweat and tears (not to mention money) as collateral damage.
Without consultation with us, bureaucrats have convinced the Minister to cease enforcement action on “regionally controlled” weeds, of which ragwort is the chief villain in this part of Victoria. The bean-counters and economic rationalists in government may well save a few dollars, but it is going to impact heavily on the struggling bottom line of many farmers who have done the right thing – both for themselves and their neighbours – for many years.
TRIHOLM LANDCARE GROUP INC.
How many decision makers, including the Minister, remember the community division and bitterness caused by a similar stroke of the pen in 1984 when the Lands Department stopped enforcing the legislation?
Someone famous once said that if we ignore the lessons of history, we are doomed to repeat them. This decision will impact on you, your profitability, the value of your land, and your quality of life.
We have been told that 95% of landowners do the right thing when it comes to weed control. However, it is the 5% who don’t who will reverse all the progress you have made, and all because of a shortsighted and self interested decision. Your work over the last 20 or more years will be wasted!
As a Landcare group, operating under the umbrella of the South Gippsland Landcare Network, we must unite urgently to get this decision reversed. Individual complaints count for nothing and are a waste of time and emotion. We need our local elected parliamentarians on side too, so that a strong representation can be made to the Minister before it is too late!
If there is no ragwort enforcement by November 2009, the impact will be felt by summer 2010.
Members of surrounding Landcare Groups have been invited to this meeting.
Gerry O’Keeffe of DSE will be attending. We will be asking Gerry to extend an invitation to any of the decision makers to attend, to explain the change of policy.
