Lomandra Love: 1,700 to plant!

We hope to plant out around 1700 seedlings of Lomandra longifolia.
Lomandras are plants that look like a bit like a grass, but have attractive nectar bearing flowers. Here are some photos.

Ian Higgins, our Environment Officer says “Lomandras are one of the creekside species that disappeared in the gold rush.  We’re excited to be putting so many back as not only are Lomandras beautiful, they are very tough, staying green all year and they don’t get eaten by wallabies. They are also good habitat plants and are essential food plants for some butterflies.”

Because the plants don’t need guarding, we can plant lots very quickly, but 1700 is still a big task! Can you help?

The Group is offering free plants for helpers as the more indigenous plants there are in the district, the better for our local fauna.  Lomandras are perfect for any garden as they don’t take up much space and look great all year round.   Here’s an article on how you can support or attract butterflies in your own garden.

Wear: clothing appropriate for the weather including sturdy footwear and if possible, gloves.

We’ll supply all needed equipment and some light refreshments afterwards.

Meet at the footbridge 350m south of Lewis Dve. Here’s a link to a map.
