Fifteen Lismore Landcare members recently toured the Riverina district of News South Wales and Victoria on a 4 day Landcare bus trip.

The aim of the trip was to learn about sustainable farming in another district by visiting research institutions, meeting local Landcare members and visiting properties covering a range of farming enterprises. A highlight of the trip was seeing some of the research being undertaken on Canola and new Lucerne alternatives at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute.

Lismore Landcare Coordinator Karen O’Keefe said that the Lismore group undertakes a Landcare bus trip each year, providing excellent opportunity for Landcare members to visit different regions, meet new people and see differences in farming practices.

The trip was partially funded by the Lismore Land Protection Group’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry FarmReady Industry Grant aimed at adapting farmers to climate change.

Next year during August the Landcare group plans to visit the Wimmera for several days to look at sustainable cropping methods.
