The Mount Elephant Community Committee (MECM) was awarded the prestigious 'Landcare Community Group Award' at the recent Corangamite Catchment Management Authority 2009 Regional Landcare Awards held at Narmbool. MECM will now be in the running for the Landcare Community Group award at the Victorian State Landcare awards.

The Mount Elephant Community Committee could be crowned the best in the state after taking out the Regional Landcare awards last week.

Members attended a presentation dinner at Elaine last Friday where they were awarded the honour in the Landcare Community Group category.

Mt Elephant group president Lesley Brown said the committee was nominated by Lismore Land Protection Group Landcare Coordinator Karen O'Keefe.

"This award is recognition of the communities work over the last 9 years for pest and weed control, revegetation and working with school groups," Ms Brown said.

"We will now move on to the state awards later this year."

The group has also been busy planting 1,000 trees on the mount's north west slope and will be planting a further 1,500 as the first step of the Corangamite Shire Environment Grant.

The group will host a community planting day on Sunday 12th July from 10am to 3pm.

Ms Brown said all were welcome to the event and a BBQ lunch would be provided.
