Who are your ‘underground livestock’? Why are they so important?
During this session we will examine the role that soil microbes play in creating and maintaining healthy soils and how they can influence plant growth. We will consider simple ways to measure the life in your soil (the ‘Soil Your Undies’ project) and use a microscope to explore the hidden worlds within various soils and compost. This session will lead on to later workshops which will focus on earthworms and how to create a great biological compost, ie. how to ‘breed and feed’ your underground livestock.
This session will be presented by Kylie Pickles, an educator with an allied health background. Kylie has worked as a lecturer in higher education and has delivered interactive and engaging medical science workshops over the past 15 years. Kylie is now focusing her work on soil health – promoting the positive impact healthy soils can have for our environment and our health. Kylie has been studying soil biology and soil management through Dr. Elaine Inghams’ Soil Food Web (SFW) School and is currently completing the SFW Consultant training program.
This first session in the series ‘Magic in the Soil’ will be of interest to anyone who would like to learn about the microscopic world that exists under our feet and the importance of soil biology for creating healthy soils in our gardens and on our farms.
