A report of the GPS / Mapping Workshop held by Baranduda Landcare on Jan 22 2011 as part of the Volunteer Action project
Geoff McKernan Sustainable Landscapes Officer - North East Catchment Management Authority generously volunteered his time and expertise to conduct this workshop which was designed to raise awareness of the usage of GPS technology in Landcare related activities.
Geoff firstly introduced basic concepts such as regional settings, saving waypoints, identifying and the various options for gps information display.
Geoff then identified software that is freely available for download and use from the internet for garmin based gps devices
The first is called DNRGarmin which can be used to perform real-time tracking with your GPS and GIS.
DNR Garmin can be run stand-alone, outside of a GIS and can save shapefiles, dBase files, KML, GPX, or text files with projected coordinates.
The second is called MapWindowwhich is a GPL (general public licensed) GIS (geographic informatinon systems) software for generating maps
Belinda Pearce project office for Kiewa Catchment Landcare group made available a couple of Garmin GPS units for use at the workshop.
