Funds gained in August 2011 through a Junior Landcare Grant have enabled our Landcare group to support the Huntly Kinder to purchase gardening equipment for the kinder children.
Two raised vegetable garden beds will be installed to replace existing under-performing garden beds and enable year round growing of vegetables and herbs by kinder children. A rotating compost bin (to compliment the chooks) will ensure that all food scraps are utilised and returned to the garden. Wheelbarrows, gardening tools and watering cans will enable the children to be actively involved in the planning, caring and harvesting of their gardens.
Huntly Primary School runs a very successful sustainability program and the initiative at Huntly Kinder will provide an introduction to these concepts and a continuity of learning.
Community members are more than welcome to come along and help both the Landcare group and Kinder committee develop the sustainability area within the Kinder yard.
