North East Landcare members will tackle big issues relating to soil health at a seminar being held at Whorouly Community Centre on 23 March.

Speakers will cover issues related to water, soil and carbon and explore how climate change, alternative energy and even soil biology fit into the equation.

The forum is the second Ovens Landcare Network Annual Soil Health event. Last year more than 150 landholders attended.

Wayne Donehue, Community chairperson of the Ovens Soil Health committee, said the agenda was designed to stimulate interest in practical ways of building our soil resource.

  • Soil aeration guru, Allan Yeoman will examine the potential for agriculture to mitigate greenhouse effects;
  • Permaculture co-founder, David Holmgren will outline how farmers can contribute to ameliorating fossil fuel dependence and climate change; and
  • Local landholders will share the results of “Lime and Bugs” trials held at twelve sites, stretching from Lucyvale to Moyhu.
  • The Soil Health event is funded by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program with support from the Department of  Primary Industries and North East CMA.

  • To register, contact the Ovens Landcare Coordinator on 03 5727 9266.
