Landcaring in Christmas Hills

The fourth in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2008 is:

“An evening of Bats, with a barbecue”

A presentation by:

Dr. Lindy Lumsden,

Senior Scientist,

Program Leader Threatened Species Group,

Department of Sustainability and Environment

combined with a barbecue and group meeting at Pip and Doug’s place

6pm – 10:30pm on Saturday, 29th November, 2008

Lindy is based at the Arthur Rylah Institute, the wildlife research institute DSE, where she has been conducting ecological research on bats for almost 30 years. In recent years Lindy’s research has focused on rural landscapes, investigating the distribution, ecology and habitat requirements of insect-eating bats.

You will learn more about the bats of Christmas Hills, their food, shelter and other habitat requirements, and what we can do to help.

Following a talk by Lindy, we will meet an Eastern Freetail Bat that has accompanied Lindy on such talks for 19 years now, observe bats using both spotlights and a ‘bat detector’, then check harp traps set up earlier to see what they have caught.

Please wear sturdy footwear, and bring a torch or handheld spotlight, as well as something to cook on the barbecue and accompanying refreshments.

9:00pm – 9:45pm    Tea, coffee, spotlighting and bat detecting – step outside to observe bats in the wild with spotlights and the bat detector (a device that can detect the high frequency calls beyond our hearing range) – while sipping on tea or coffee
