Landcaring in Christmas Hills

The first in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2007 is:

“Helping a neighbour”

A property visit, weed control works and dinner

at Judith’s place

(There is limited parking space (~ 6 cars max.) down Judith’s driveway, so if you are not staying for dinner, please park out on Skyline Road)

from 2pm - 5pm+ on Sunday, 4th February, 2007

Judith Ellerton’s property drops steeply from the ridge along Skyline Road down to the valley floor of Watsons Creek. Although she has done considerable weed control work in the past, she has been unable to do much recently and is concerned that the woody weeds may be getting away down in the valley. We will form small teams to traverse the property and tackle any woody weeds (mainly pittosporum) we can find. In return Judith wishes to put on dinner for those who can stay – Judith’s house sits up on the ridge and has spectacular views across both sides of the ridge.

It is likely to be hard work – on steep slopes in potentially hot weather – so be prepared.

Please wear sturdy footwear, and bring any of: chainsaw and protective wear (we are likely to need up to 4 chainsaws), gardening gloves, secateurs, bow saw, small mattock, empty shoe polish dispensers (herbicide dabbers), small paint brushes or small dropper bottles (for applying herbicide to cut surfaces)

The rough program for the day is:

2:00pm – 3:30pm   Weed control works in small teams – it is expected that we will spread out and work our way downhill in small teams using the cut-and-paint technique

3:30pm – 4:15pm   Guided walk around the property, in particular around Watsons Creek to discover some of its natural values

4:00pm – 5:00pm   Afternoon tea followed by dinner (BYO drinks) – socialising up at the house
