Identifying local plants, birds and other things at the Shacko's

Landcaring in Christmas Hills

The fifth in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2006 is:

“Identifying local plants, birds and other things”

A property visit and knowledge-sharing event

at Rob and Linda’s place

795 Buttermans Track

from 2pm - 5pm on Saturday, 7th October, 2006

Spring is here and with it comes the flowering of many of our local plant species, and increased activity of many of our local animals. Rob Shackleton and Linda Joyce’s place, with its 30 hectares or so of remnant native vegetation and the neighbouring Kinglake National Park, offers us a great venue to seek out and learn to identify some of the indigenous flora and fauna of Christmas Hills. We each have varying knowledge and skills in relation to finding, recognising and identifying our local plants and animals, and collectively we have a wealth of local expertise. Learning from each other will be the flavour of the day. Also with only one more event in our program for 2006, we will start making plans for what we might do in 2007.

At this activity you will

·       Have a look around Rob and Linda’s property

·       Discover and learn to recognise different plant and animal species

·       Observe and learn to recognise some of the different vegetation communities in Christmas Hills and how different species associate with them

·       Learn more about the knowledge and skills others bring to our group

·       Have fun socialising with neighbours who with you are landcaring for Christmas Hills

·       Begin planning what we do as a group in 2007

Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing to suit the weather, and bring any of: plant, bird and other identification field guides, binoculars, camera, hand lens (magnifying glass)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rough program for the day is:

2:00pm – 4:00pm   Guided walk around the property, led by Rob, to discover some of its natural values, and some of the pressures they may be under. All present will share their local flora and fauna recognition knowledge and skills

4:00pm – 5:00pm   Afternoon tea socialising and initial discussion of what activities we may want to undertake as a group during 2007

You are welcome to extend this invitation to others you know are interested in landcare in Christmas Hills.

If you wish to attend please RSVP to:   Doug on ph: 9730 2626 or email: pipdoug@bigpond.net.au
