The fourth in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2009 is:
“Looking small – observing the early post-fire recovery of the bush”
A property visit starting at
Jo, Adrian and Declan’s at 1251 Skyline Road
and taking in Tony and Brigid’s at 1279 Skyline Road (“Windemere”)
2pm - 5pm on Sunday, 30th August, 2009
The natural recovery of the Christmas Hills bush after the February bushfires will take some time, but is already underway. The signs however are small, so we need to be ‘looking small’ to observe the early signs of recovery. As we walk around Jo and Adrian’s and Tony and Brigid’s properties we will observe the many native plant species, and probably a few weed species as well, that are regenerating from tree trunks, or sprouting from rootstock or underground bulbs, or germinating from seed stored in the soil or dropped into the ashbed.
We will endeavour to identify some of the different species emerging – both native and weed species - and learn more about how and when to control the weeds.
We will also have a look at some photos provided by our resident fire ecologists, Robyn and Di, that illustrate the recovery of the bush from past bushfires.
So come along and practice ‘looking small’ to see the small but numerous examples of the bush recovering.
Please wear sturdy footwear, and dress to suit the weather

2:00pm – 4:00pm Walk across Jo and Adrian’s and Tony and Brigid’s, observing and identifying the different plants emerging as we go
4:00pm – 5:00pm Afternoon tea – Landcare update and socialising
