This event is part of
A practical demonstration of rabbit control methods
Rabbits in Christmas Hills threaten many of our natural environmental assets. In particular they graze on native plants such as orchids and lilies, and they build warrens in creeks that can destabilise the soil in banks. They also compete for pasture grasses with the horses, cows and sheep that many of us keep.
The Christmas Hills Landcare Group is currently running an integrated rabbit control program in a targeted area of Christmas Hills using funds it has received through grants from the Port Phillip and Westernport CMA the Shire of Nillumbik, and the Trust for Nature.
This event will provide practical demonstrations of most of the rabbit control methods being used in this program, in particular:
- Ferreting
- Pindone oat baiting with a bait station
- Identifying warren entrances using a smoke machine
- Collapsing warrens with a mini excavator
Landholders participating in the baiting component of the targeted program will also be able to collect their bait stations on the day.
And as a special treat, lunch will feature rabbit on the menu. Local residents have been invited to contribute a rabbit dish of their choice towards lunch, and we ask that you please bring a plate of something to accompany these dishes.
