This event is part of
A spring walk and talk with Professor Beth Gott, School of Biological Science, Monash University, and Wurundjeri people, including Vicki Nicholson-Brown, Elder and Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne.
In Christmas Hills our land is part of the country for which the Wurundjeri people are traditional owners. In June last year, we hosted a group of Wurundjeri people for afternoon tea, and agreed to ‘do more things together’. The Wurundjeri people who lived here before us used many of our local plants for food, fibre and medicinal purposes, and in Professor Beth Gott and Vicki Nicholson-Brown, we have two people with extensive knowledge of the traditional uses of some of these plants.
This event will help us:
- Learn more about traditional uses of some of our local plants
- Strengthen our relationship with the Wurundjeri people
- Observe the recovery of the bush after the 2009 bushfires
- Appreciate the spring show of local wildflowers
The rough program for the day is:
2:00pm – 4:00pm Walk and talk – led by Vicki Nicholson-Brown and Beth Gott to find local plants used by Wurundjeri and learn about how they were used
4:00pm – 5:00pm Afternoon tea – socialising with neighbours and traditional owners of Christmas Hills
