Landcaring in Christmas Hills

The second in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2006 is:

“Undertaking a Small-scale Controlled Burn”

A property visit and practical demonstration

at Gad and Kylie’s place

(Please park at the corner of Muir and Reeves Roads – approximately 100 metres away)

from 2pm - 5pm on Saturday, 6th May, 2006

Following on from the talk in March by Dr. Robyn Adams - “Understanding Fire as a Property Management Tool”, Mark (Gad) Gardner will present a practical demonstration of undertaking a small-scale controlled burn. Prior to igniting the burn, you will hear about

• The objectives of this burn
• The preparations undertaken in the lead up to the burn
• What to expect and do during the burn
• Planned post-burn follow up activities

Then you will get first hand experience of the burn itself. You can participate in either of two ways:

·       you can come along to simply listen and observe, or

·       you can also assist with management and extinguishment of the burn. (in this case you will need to wear sturdy boots and long cotton or wool trousers)

Backpack sprayers (please ensure all herbicide residue has been washed out), and buckets and mops would be welcome if you wish to bring them

In the event that the weather on the day is not conducive to undertaking the burn (ie raining or too windy), this event will be postponed to the following day (Sunday, 7th May), same time, same place.

If you are unsure on the day, please call Gad on 9730 1101 to confirm if he expects to proceed as planned)

If the weather on Sunday is also unsuitable, then Gad will still take us on a guided walk of his property to look at the results of previous burns

The rough program for the day is:

2:00pm – 3:00pm   Talk by Mark (Gad) Gardner – “The practicalities of undertaking this controlled burn”

3:00pm – 4:00pm   Practical Demonstration – igniting, managing and extinguishing a small-scale controlled burn on Gad’s property

4:00pm – 5:00pm   Afternoon tea – socialising and informal discussions
