Landcaring in Christmas Hills

The second in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2007 is:

“Undertaking a Small-scale Controlled Burn – take 2”

A property visit and practical demonstration

at Gad and Kylie’s place

(Please park at the corner of Muir and Reeves Roads – approximately 100 metres away)

from 2pm - 5pm on Sunday, 6th May, 2007

At about this time last year we visited Gad and Kylie’s place with the intention of undertaking a small-scale controlled burn. The conditions, however, were not conducive to doing the burn, so we agreed to postpone until the following year. Well here we are a year later!

Mark (Gad) Gardner will present a practical demonstration of undertaking a small-scale controlled burn. Prior to igniting the burn, you will be reminded about

• The objectives of this burn
• The preparations undertaken in the lead up to the burn
• What to expect and do during the burn
• Planned post-burn follow up activities

Then you will get first hand experience of the burn itself. You can either:

·       come along to simply listen and observe, or

·       also assist with management and extinguishment of the burn. (in this case you will need to wear sturdy boots and long cotton or wool trousers)

We will also help with the erection of a rabbit exclusion fence to protect post-fire regrowth.

Backpack sprayers filled with water to assist with fire extinguishment (please ensure all herbicide residue has been washed out), would be welcome if you wish to bring them

The rough program for the day is:

2:00pm – 2:30pm   Talk by Mark (Gad) Gardner – “The practicalities of undertaking this controlled burn”

2:30pm – 4:00pm   Practical Demonstration – igniting, managing and extinguishing a small-scale controlled burn on Gad’s property, followed by erection of rabbit exclusion fencing

4:00pm – 5:00pm   Afternoon tea – socialising and discussion about the year’s activities
