Buninyong Primary School and Derrinallum College students get a cultural experience on Mount Elephant

The crater on Mount Elephant was host to around 100 students from Buninyong Primary School and Derrinallum College recently. The grade 3 and 4 students climbed into the crater of the mount and broke up into 3 totem groups – Emus, Wedge Tailed Eagles and Kangaroos to participate in workshops.

Mount Elephant Community Management president Gert Stammberger welcomed the group to the Mount and provided some history of the Mount Elephant restoration project.

Ted Lovett and Tristan Harris performed a welcome to country, talked about the dreamtime, and performed cultural dances and didgeridoo playing with the students.

Local farmer Chris Lang talked about volcanoes, waterways and the landscape.

Landcare Coordinator Karen O’Keefe discussed weeds, rabbits, tree planting and restoration of the mount.

Buninyong Primary School students will perform a play about Mount Buninyong and Mount Elephant in the coming months.
