1. Potential Christmas Hills Landcare projects - Expressions of Interest due Friday, 20th August
With the assistance of the Nillumbik Council the majority of residents/land owners within the Landcare group's boundary will soon be receiving a letter seeking your expression of interest in getting involved in potential projects being considered by the Christmas Hills Landcare Group.

One project is looking at building on the group’s existing targeted rabbit control program, and the second is looking at improving our knowledge of native fauna that occurs in Christmas Hills. You can indicate which of these potential projects you may be interested in, and the extent to which you think you could be involved.

The group currently has an opportunity to apply for funds for these potential projects, but will only develop projects if and where there is strong interest from land owners.

The number of land owners who express interest, and the location and nature of their properties, will play a big part in what projects we develop, as well as the extent and location of any project proposal developed. So please let your neighbours know, encourage them to complete and return the Expression of Interest form, and encourage them to encourage their neighbours to do the same.

The Christmas Hills Landcare Group boundary also embraces residents along Skyline Road who are in the Yarra Ranges Council area, but the Nillumbik Council's help with the mailout doesn't extend to these people. I will be emailing a copy of the letter and the form to group members who fall into this category, and ask that they help spread the word to their neighbours. Anyone else who believes they can help reach these people, please let me know. A copy of the letter and Expression of Interest form are also available on our website here.

To be able to meet the funding application deadline we need the responses no later than Friday, 20th August, 2010.

2. CHills Lounge - Friday, 6th August

The CHills Lounge (Christmas Hills Community Happy Hour) is on again from 5:30pm onwards this Friday 6th August at the Christmas Hills North Fire Brigade Station on the corner of Ridge and Muir Roads. A great way to meet and socialise with your neighbours, these are held on the first Friday of every month.

3. Christmas Hills Musical Soiree - Friday, 6th August

The Christmas Hills Musical Soiree is on again from 5:00pm this Friday at the Blue Wren Theatre, Christmas Hills Primary School.

The soiree is an opportunity for all budding, accomplished, or anywhere in between, musicians in Christmas Hills to showcase their talents. Performance nominations can be sent to Kurt Sheahan (ph: 9730 1238; email: shean.kurt.r@edumail.vic.gov.au), but will also be accepted on the night.

This is a free community event, with food, cake and refreshments available for purchase.

4. Christmas Hills Fire Brigade newsletter

The winter edition of the Christmas Hills Fire Brigade newsletter is available for download at http://home.vicnet.net.au/~chfb/
Some residents will also receive it as a hardcopy in the mail, but as the brigade does not have an up-to-date list of residents, many will miss out. If you'd like to receive it directly by email, please send your email address to robyn.adams@members.cfa.vic.gov.au, and you will be added to the brigade's newsletter emailing list.

5. On the horizon

There are a few things on the horizon that may be of interest that I want to give you a heads up for:
  • The next Christmas Hills Landcare event is focussed on practical weed control and is expected to be held in late August/early September - date and venue to be confirmed
  • The next edition of the Victorian Landcare Magazine is due out soon, and with the theme of Landcare and bushfire recovery, it will feature an article on the Christmas Hills Landcare Group and the role it played in recovery after the bushfires. Thank you to all those who contributed. Financial members should receive a copy in the mail, but it should also be available in PDF format online (after it has been released) here
  • The biennial Port Phillip and Western Port Landcare Awards Presentation and Celebration event is coming up on Saturday, 11th September, and will be held at ZINC in Federation Square. This enjoyable and inspiring event is free for landcare members, so if you are interested in  attending, please let me know and I can forward more details
Cheers

Doug
