1. Plotting the demise of rabbits in Christmas Hills – Sunday 18th July
This
Christmas Hills Landcare event will provide practical demonstrations of
most of the rabbit control methods being used in our targeted rabbit
control program, in particular:
• Ferreting
• Pindone oat baiting with a bait station
• Identifying warren entrances using a smoke machine
• Collapsing warrens with a mini excavator
Landholders participating in the baiting component of the targeted
program will also be able to collect their bait stations on the day.
And as a special treat, lunch will feature rabbit on the menu. Local
residents have been invited to contribute a rabbit dish of their choice
towards lunch, and we ask that you please bring a plate of something to
accompany these dishes.
More details in the attached flier.

2. CHills Lounge and Christmas Hills history book launch - Friday 2nd July
The CHills Lounge (Christmas Hills
Community Happy Hour) is on again from 5:30pm onwards on Friday 2nd
July at
the Christmas Hills North Fire Brigade Station on the
corner
of Ridge and Muir Roads. A great way to meet and socialise with your
neighbours, these are held on the first Friday of every month. At this
particular CHills Lounge a book on the history of Christmas Hills will
be launched.
Mick Woiwod has updated and
revised his 1992 book, "Once around the Sugarloaf: The
Transformation of a Victorian Landscape and the Story of its People".
The new edition, titled
"The Christmas Hills Story: Once around the Sugarloaf II", will be launched at 7:30pm on
Friday, 2nd July at the Christmas Hills North Fire Brigade
Station
The book presents a
history of Christmas Hills and is in A4 format, 275 pages long, and
copies will be available for purchase at $30 each.
A further daylight event is also being planned for Tuesday 6th July,
following the Friday launch, to allow those former residents of the
district and others unable to attend a night event to purchase books.
This will take the form of a re-enactment at the David Christmas
Memorial along One Tree Hill Road, incorporating the performance of the
Ballad of David Christmas to the sound of bullock-bells and a small mob
of sheep.
3. Lyrebird survey – Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July
Come
and join Parks Victoria's annual Lyrebird Survey at Kinglake National
Park. There are many signs of Lyrebirds having survived the Black
Saturday bushfires.
The Lyrebird Survey has been held since the 1980s. Over the years information has been collected on the Superb Lyrebird's (Menura novaehollandiae)
behaviour, distribution and population trends throughout the park. Male
Lyrebirds call mostly during winter, when they construct and maintain
an open mound in the bush. They then sing and dance on the mound to
display to potential mates.
Members of Christmas Hills Landcare Group have been invited to
participate as volunteers. The actual surveying takes place early on
the Sunday, but preparatory information is provided on the Saturday
afternoon. Volunteers are welcome to stay overnight in basic
accommodation at the Parks Victoria office.
